The American
White Belted Dairy Cattle Association was formed in April
1988 to help promote the belted dairy cattle that remain in
America, which were in a declining stage. The belted cattle
of America have received their white belt characteristics
from ancestry such as the Dutch belted, the nearly extinct
Red Sheeted Somerset or the Belted Swiss Dairy cattle.
The original
founders were Paul Daniels, Dick Gray and Dick’s sons. Dick
Gray along with his sons have a large farm in California.
On the farm, they have several hundred white belted
animals. Paul Daniels has a dairy farm in Vermont where he
milks whitebelts.
In August of 1988, the organization became incorporated
under the Vermont Non-Profit Corporation Act. The American
Whitebelted Dairy Cattle Assn. is not the same as the
Dutchbelted Cattle Assn. However, all animals that would
qualify for the Dutchbelted Assn will qualify for the
American Whitebelted Dairy cattle Assn. The main difference
is that the new organization has different set of rules on
the qualifications needed to be registered. Any dairy
animal that is red, brown, or black with a white belt,
regardless of heritage, can be registered as a foundation
animal.
The purpose of
this open registry is to have more owners and breeders of
this special animal in an organization that can benefit all
involved.. This Association will strive to preserve and
promote the nearly extinct Red Sheeted Somerset, the Belted
Swiss Dairy Cattle and the declining Dutchbelt Cattle.
